The Karnataka Government has agreed to change the name of Belagavi Railway Station to Shivabasava Mahaswamiji Railway Station Belagavi. The decision was made on November 5, 2025.
Now, the proposal has been sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs (Government of India) for final approval. After the Centre approves it, Indian Railways will officially update the name everywhere.
Why the Name Change?
Belagavi Railway Station (BGM) will get a new name to honor Shivabasava Mahaswamiji. This change reflects the culture, history, and spiritual importance of Karnataka.
Other Railway Stations Also Proposed for Renaming
Along with Belagavi, the Karnataka Government has suggested new names for three more stations:
Bidar Railway Station (BIDR) → Channabasava Pattadevaru Railway Station
Vijayapura Railway Station (BJP) → Jnanayogi Shri Siddeshwara Swamiji Railway Station
Suragondanakoppa Station (SMET) → Bhaayagad Railway Station
What Happens Next?
The Central Government must approve the proposal. After that:
New signboards will be put up
Railway announcements will use the new names
Maps, apps, and online platforms will be updated
Updates will be shared once the final notification is issued.
