Shreyas Iyer Out for Two Months After Spleen Injury; Return for New Zealand ODIs Uncertain.

Team India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer will not play cricket for the next two months after suffering a serious spleen injury during the third ODI against Australia last week.

According to reports, Iyer had internal bleeding and had to undergo a medical procedure in a Sydney hospital to stop it. He was kept in the ICU for a few days, but his condition is now stable, and he has been moved to a normal ward.

How the Injury Happened

Iyer got injured while trying to take a difficult catch to dismiss Australia’s Alex Carey at the SCG. After the attempt, he felt severe pain and was rushed to the hospital. Scans showed that his spleen was ruptured, which caused internal bleeding.

Medical Procedure

The BCCI clarified that Iyer did not have surgery, but instead underwent a medical procedure called interventional trans-catheter embolisation. In this process, doctors use a thin tube (catheter) to block the area of bleeding — a standard and safe method to control internal bleeding.

Impact on His Career

Because of this injury, Iyer will miss the ODI series against South Africa next month. His availability for the New Zealand ODIs in January is also uncertain since he will need time to recover and regain fitness.

This also means Iyer might miss his chance to be part of India’s T20 World Cup squad, as the team is expected to finalize its players by January.
