Mohammed Siraj at Idea Exchange: “God Had Written — You Will Be a Hero”

During India’s challenging Test series against England, Mohammed Siraj emerged as one of the brightest stars for the team. The tour came at a time of change — the Indian Test side was in transition, several senior players were unavailable, and a new captain had just taken charge. To make matters tougher, India’s main fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was struggling with fitness issues.

Despite these challenges, Siraj rose to the occasion. In the absence of Bumrah, he became the team’s strike bowler and helped India secure two memorable victories, both in matches where Bumrah couldn’t play.

The five-match Test series between India and England was intense, with every game stretching to the final day. Siraj’s performance stood out throughout the series — he took 23 wickets, making him one of the leading wicket-takers and playing a major role in India leveling the series.

At the Idea Exchange session, moderated by Deputy Associate Editor Devendra Pandey, Siraj opened up about his experiences during the tour. He spoke about:

The pressure of performing in the absence of senior bowlers.

How he maintained focus and confidence even in difficult situations.

The importance of teamwork and the guidance he received from the team’s support staff.

His belief that destiny played a role in his success — as he put it, “God had written, ‘ja hero ban ja tu’ (go, become a hero).”

Siraj also shared how he stays grounded despite fame and appreciation. He emphasized the importance of hard work, discipline, and humility, saying that success only lasts if a player continues to improve and stay mentally strong.

Through his journey, Siraj has not only proven his skill as a fast bowler but also his ability to handle pressure and inspire others — making him a true symbol of determination and resilience in Indian cricket.
