Shivaji Kagnikar: A Gandhian Leader Honoured Again.

Rani Channamma University will hold its 14th Convocation on November 25, 2025. One of the most respected people receiving an Honorary Doctorate is Shivaji Kagnikar — a simple, Gandhian social worker who has changed many villages around Belagavi. This is his second honorary doctorate; the first was awarded by Karnataka State Rural Development and Panchayat Raj University, Gadag, for his lifetime work in rural development.

A Life Dedicated to Social Change

Shivaji Kagnikar, born in Kattanbhavi village, started Jana Jagrana, a movement that improved rural education and water conservation. He opened night schools in remote villages, encouraged people to save water, and helped them become self-reliant.

Even though he faced poverty and discrimination in his early life, he followed Gandhian values. Inspired by Sane Guruji’s writings on literacy and kindness, he dedicated his life to serving people. Wearing simple khadi clothes and travelling on a bicycle, Kagnikar believes in action, not slogans.

Transforming Kattanbhavi and Other Villages

Years ago, Kattanbhavi struggled with water shortage, unemployment, debt, and alcoholism. Kagnikar brought villagers together and discussed watershed development with experts like Late Ram Apte and Sadashivrao Bhosle.

He took villagers to Ralegan Siddhi, Anna Hazare’s model village, to learn new ideas. Soon, the transformation began:

Over 1 lakh trees were planted using contour trenches

Groundwater levels increased, bringing life back to the village well

Ponds, cattle sheds, and biogas plants were created

Milk production increased from 30 litres to 1,400 litres per day

Birds and wildlife returned, improving the environment

Bonded labour ended, and villagers became self-reliant

He repeated this success in Ningenhatti by planting another 1 lakh trees and building lakes that turned dry land into fertile fields.

Today, Kattanbhavi has an Anganwadi, schooling up to 7th standard, and a successful night school — proving how water and education can change a community.

A Role Model for Generations
