Karnataka transport department officials visit 5 cities to study bike taxi policies

Taxi Olha Uber Rapido

Karnataka Transport Department officials are studying bike taxi policies, but there’s no clear indication they’re visiting 5 cities for this purpose. Instead, the department has:
– Withdrawn the Bike Taxi Policy: The Karnataka government withdrew its electric bike taxi policy due to low response from platforms and misuse by aggregators operating petrol bikes as taxis.
– Enforcing the Ban: The Karnataka High Court ordered bike taxi aggregators like Ola, Uber, and Rapido to cease operations within six weeks unless the government notifies regulations under the Motor Vehicles Act.
– No New Policy Planned: The Transport Department has stated there’s no plan to frame a bike taxi policy, citing personal vehicles are only meant for personal use and can’t be used as commercial vehicles.

The department’s focus seems to be on enforcing the ban and studying mobility sector issues rather than formulating new policies for bike taxis. The Karnataka Electric Bike Taxi Scheme 2021 was introduced to promote electric bike taxis, but it was withdrawn in 2024 due to lack of response and misuse Taxi Olha Uber Rapido
