Floods Hit North Karnataka After Heavy Rains and Dam Discharge.

Kalaburagi, Bidar, Vijayapura, and Yadgir worst affected; alert issued for Belagavi and Bagalkot.

Heavy rains in the catchment areas of the Bhima River and its tributaries have led to floods in several parts of North Karnataka. The worst-hit districts include Kalaburagi, Bidar, Vijayapura, and Yadgir, while flood alerts have also been sounded in Belagavi and Bagalkot.

Officials say the floods are a result of increased water release from Maharashtra’s Ujani and Neera dams, coupled with continuous downpours. The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) has warned that flooding is likely to continue in the coming days as more rain is forecast.

At present, the Bhima River is flowing at extreme levels in Yadgir, Kalaburagi, and Bidar, while the Kagina River in Kalaburagi has also crossed danger marks. Similarly, the Krishna River in Raichur, the Doni River in Vijayapura, and the Manjira River in Bidar are flowing at severe flood levels.

Adding to the concern, heavy inflow into the Ghataprabha River has raised the risk of floods in areas downstream of the   Dam in Belagavi district.
