Durga Mata Daud in Belagavi: A Navaratri Devotional Run

The Durga Mata Daud (Mother Durga Run) is a special devotional run held every year in Belagavi during Navaratri. For all nine days, people gather early in the morning and run through different routes in the city.

Dressed in white clothes with saffron scarves or turbans, thousands of participants create a powerful and devotional atmosphere. This is not a race but a spiritual run filled with music, drums, and chants praising Goddess Durga.

At the front, a small chariot often carries children dressed as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his mother Jijabai, reminding people of culture and history. The runners, called “Dharkaris” (warriors), chant slogans like “Durga Mata Ki Jai” and “Jai Shivaji Amba Bhavani.” The main aim is devotion, fitness, discipline, and encouraging youth to stay away from bad habits.

History

The Durga Mata Daud began in Maharashtra in the 1980s and reached Karnataka in the late 1990s. In Belagavi, it started nearly 30 years ago with the efforts of youth and cultural groups. At first, only a few people joined. Today, it has grown into a huge movement, with tens of thousands of participants on the last day of Navaratri.

Growth

Over the years, the run has spread across many parts of Belagavi. Every day, the route changes, passing by temples and city landmarks. More women and children now take part, making it a true celebration for the whole community. Streets are decorated with lights and arches, while families and temples welcome runners with offerings.

Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, when gatherings were restricted, organizers kept the tradition alive with a symbolic run. Now, with growing numbers each year, Belagavi has become a model for other towns to start similar events.
