Diwali, also known as Deepawali, is one of the biggest festivals in India, celebrating the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. In 2025, Diwali falls on October 20. The main day, Lakshmi Puja, is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi (the goddess of wealth) and Lord Ganesha. People clean their homes, light diyas, and offer prayers for happiness and prosperity.
This year, the Lakshmi Puja muhurat (auspicious time) is from 7:08 PM to 8:18 PM. To make your puja more auspicious, here are some simple dos and don’ts to follow.
✅ Dos for Lakshmi Puja
Clean and decorate your home: Keep your house neat, bright, and welcoming. Light diyas, make rangoli, and decorate with flowers and candles.
Keep a Kalash (pot): Place a coconut on a Manglik Kalash (decorated pot) at both sides of your main entrance to bring positivity.
Set up the puja area properly: Keep the puja setup in the northeast corner of your home. Place the idols facing east and sit facing north while praying.
Use a red cloth: Spread a clean red cloth on the puja table and place idols of Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ganesha, and Goddess Saraswati on it.
Keep valuables near the altar: You can place gold, silver, or other precious items near the idols to attract wealth and prosperity.
Do the puja at the right time: Perform the puja during pradosh kaal (between 7:08 PM and 8:18 PM) for best results.
❌ Don’ts for Lakshmi Puja
Avoid glass idols: Use idols made of clay, brass, or silver instead.
Don’t keep shoes at the entrance: Goddess Lakshmi is believed to enter clean and sacred spaces.
Never leave the lamp unattended: Keep the diya burning all night as a symbol of light and positivity.
Avoid money transactions: Don’t lend or borrow money during Diwali day.
Don’t gift leather, knives, or crackers: These are considered unlucky gifts during Diwali.
Avoid using iron utensils or leaving garbage outside: It’s believed to block the entry of prosperity.
Say no to alcohol and non-veg food: Stay pure and follow a vegetarian diet on the day of Lakshmi Puja.
