Parts of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Tamil Nadu are on high alert as Cyclone Montha moves closer to the coast. The storm has become a severe cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
Government Preparations
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has ordered officials to take quick action to protect people and reduce damage in coastal areas. People living near the sea have been shifted to safer places, and special officers have been appointed to monitor cyclone relief centres. The Chief Minister also instructed officials to ensure clean drinking water and avoid contamination.
Weather Alerts
The Rayalaseema region, along with Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, is under an orange alert for heavy rain and strong winds. IMD said Cyclone Montha may cross the Andhra coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam by tonight (October 28) with wind speeds of 90–110 km per hour.
Rain in Maharashtra and Other States
The Vidarbha region of Maharashtra is likely to get moderate to heavy rain from October 28 to 30. A yellow alert has been issued for Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Wardha, Washim, Yavatmal, Bhandara, Gondia, and Nagpur, warning of rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.
Other states like Madhya Pradesh, Bengal, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Rajasthan, and Goa are also on alert for rain and strong winds.
Relief and Rescue Operations
The government has deployed 11 NDRF teams and 12 SDRF teams for rescue and relief work. Fire Services, swimmers, boats, life jackets, and other emergency tools have been placed in coastal areas. Ambulance services and medical camps are ready in all cyclone shelters.
Funds have also been released for rescue, medical aid, food, water, and road clearance. Additional money will be provided if some districts face severe damage.
